Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. Also, it doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great deal particularly if your office or home has a lot of bare floors and you want to save money. It's also very quiet and operates while you are at work or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying dock, though. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be replaced with a wet one in minutes.

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it simple to clean and efficient at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also features an impressive suction system and a self-emptying bin. It's the best robot vacuum for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming this feature, which we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular look that looks more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competitors. It's one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work, or at night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are similarly capable and look better. If you're willing with a bit more noise and a little more cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine that is similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the autonomous vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and cleans and dry mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home according to the degree of dirt they tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it is worth choosing a model that has zones or spot cleaning modes. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your house needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice control. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. Finally, a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto vacuum and mop-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
